NESTLED BELOW THE HERMANUS MOUNTAINS AND RIGHT ON THE LAGOON

The Hermanus Yacht Club on the Kleinriver lagoon in the lee of the Overberg Mountains, is situated half way between Hermanus and Stanford. The members are all active – taking part in fun or competition sailing almost every weekend during the summer season which starts in September. Several major regattas are held every year. Hermanus Yacht Club’s green lawns reach right down to the water’s edge. The salt water lagoon provides safe sailing for children and variable wind conditions tmake for exciting sailing for even the most experienced sailors. The Dinghy fleet consists of Lasers, Sonnets, Dabchicks and Optimists. Children are taught to sail in Optimist Dinghies through a sailing training programme and compete on a club, provincial and national level. In recent years some of our young sailors have participated in the Optimist World Championships. There is a large Catamaran fleet, consisting of mainly Hobie Cats and the Carioca keelboat fleet provides excellent sailing. Racing for both dinghies and keelboats is arranged most weekends in season and throughout holiday periods. HYC is a family orientated club, with caravan and camping sites and wooden cabins; providing the perfect weekend getaway and summer holiday venue. Evenings are all about braai fires at the club while children play in and around the Club House and front lawn. The proximity of Hermanus and Stanford mean access to beaches, whale watching, hiking and mountain biking trails, whale watching, wine tasting, craft gin and beer and excellent restaurants.
