YOUTH TRAINING

YOUTH COACHING

A JUNIOR MEMBER IS UNDER 18 YEARS OLD

Time on the water can lead to a life-long love of sailing and builds skills, self-reliance, and a sense of teamwork. It also enables young sailors to think strategically –preparing them for many of the life challenges that lie ahead in the outside world.

The Hermanus Yacht Club runs a programme for novice sailors. aged seven to 15. Although the majority of these sailors are members’ children, we do welcome non-member students on board.

We restrict our youth training to the Optimist Class of dinghies (which is reviewed on an on-going basis) and the club currently owns 6 vessels with a view to acquiring more in the near future. We use these club-owned dinghies in introductory training and given that these boats are shared among the beginners, we can accommodate up to 15 sailors each season.

Once a student has achieved a certain level of proficiency, we encourage his or her parents to buy a boat of their own. That said, an additional class legal dinghy is reserved for a young sailor whose parents aren’t in a position to purchase one. This student is chosen based on merit and commitment and is at the club’s sole discretion.

The last few seasons have been particularly successful with the Hermanus Yacht Club Juniors dominating junior sailing in the Western Cape. Our students ‘age out’ at 15 and typically convert to the Laser class, which forms the backbone of sailing at our club.

Our Youth Sailing Programme will start on 7th, 8th October 2023 for the 2023/2024 season.
